As the cold days begin to creep in, maybe people will be looking for ways to keep their skin from cracking under the harsh pressure of fall and winter.
Cold weather can bring on an onslaught of dry and cracked skin—which if left untreated can cause dermatitis, among other things.
“The cold weather is very difficult for us to help protect our skin because we lose nutrients, we lose moisture. There are essential oils that are built into our skin and a lot of those things are difficult to replenish during the winter,” said Dr. George Verghese, one of the nation’s premier dermatologists.
Winter can bring on uneasiness for people who suffer from dry skin which can in tern result in flaking, cracking and even eczema (in which the skin becomes inflamed).
Like Dr. Verghese, WebMD suggests that as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine.
“We need to stop taking those long, hot showers that we really like. Make sure it is lukewarm water, about 10 minutes is the max. Make sure after your shower or bath you use a good moisturizer,” said Dr. Verghese.
While it may be hard for some people to keep their skin in tact, it is important to seek the help of a specialist like Dr. Verghese if your skin condition worsens during the winter months.
