Acne Treatment Maryland
Acne is one of the most frequent skin conditions seen by our medical professionals at Mid-Atlantic Skin.
This is not surprising because according to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States.
Although it’s common, accurate information about acne can be scarce and thus frustrating for patients to find safe and effective treatments.
Acne consists of pimples that appear on the face, back and chest. About 80 percent of adolescents have some form of acne and about 5 percent of adults experience acne.
In normal skin, oil glands under the skin, known as sebaceous glands, produce an oily substance called sebum.
The Best Way to Treat Acne
Acne can seem like the eternal enemy–and that isn’t just for high school students either. An estimated 80 percent of all people between ages 11 and 30 experience outbreaks, and nearly 50 million Americans in total suffer from acne.
There’s no magic bullet for acne. But a recent study has shown the best way to treat it.
Is it a topical treatment? Antibiotics? Oral contraceptives? The answer is: all of the above.
A Combination Approach
Actually, you want to use all the above approaches. Don’t get confused, however. This doesn’t mean running to the store and picking up every facial washer to improve acne.
Using too many topical treatments or cleansers is counterproductive. You run the risk of aggravating the skin with chemicals, or overly drying the skin and stimulating sebum production.
Rather, a combination approach means using the different types of acne treatment. The reason for a combination approach is that acne is a combination problem.
A Combination Problem
What causes acne? The real answer is, a lot of things.
Too much oil production causes acne. Hormonal imbalances cause oil production. Stress, puberty, diet and a thousand either things can cause hormonal imbalances.
There isn’t just one factor causing acne, therefore there isn’t one cure all either.
